Who’s Hugo?

Hugo Grrrl is a Wellington-based comedy and cabaret producer, creating smutty, rough-around-the-edges, politically-charged late-night theatre that’s bound to leave ya with a smile on your face and a bit of glitter in your hair.

Hugo has over twenty original-concept shows in his repertoire, spanning multiple genres such as drag, comedy, poetry and cabaret. But he is perhaps most well known for his projects The Pun Battle and Naked Girls Reading which have been performed all over the country.

This quirky bloke was nominated for Wellingtonian Of The Year 2018 in the arts category for his work diversity in the cabaret arts, won Best Producer, Best MC and Outstanding Achievement in the Wellington Comedy Awards 2018 and was the first ever winner of TVNZ’s brand new show House of Drag.

This quirky bloke is also set to star as the only drag king in TVNZ’s brand new show House of Drag, premiering Thursday 15th of November on TVNZ OnDemand.

This adorable hairy little gentleman is perhaps best known for his creations The Pun Battle Championships and Naked Girls Reading NZ, alongside an impressive resume of other sell-out queer gigs. For his efforts, he was awarded Best Producer at The Wellington Comedy Awards ’17 and ’18, Best MC at The Wellington Comedy Awards ’18, and Outstanding Achievement for Feminist and LGBTQI+ Diversity in Comedy at The Wellington Comedy Awards ’18. Hugo Grrrl is internationally ranked twice over (dragkings.net and King Me: Rise of a Drag King), and is the current reigning national drag king champion (King of Kings).

Hugo has been featured on TVNZ’s Breakfast, Seven Sharp and The Wireless, and graced the cover of Sunday Magazine (August 2018), and was featured in Express, Regional News, and Dom Post. In addition to producing his own shows, Hugo Grrrl has performed in The Menagerie Deluxe Variety Show at the Wellington Opera House, MCd the celebrity live cooking theatre at The Food Show (including the shows for Annabelle White, Chelsea Winter and Nadia Lim) and featured in Queenstown’s Gay Ski Week. Hugo also co-hosted the RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Laila McQueen’s New Zealand show (Out in the Park Official Pride After Party).

Stay tuned to see what this filthy little powerhouse is up to next. Coming to a city near you, he’s the lad who’s always happy to see you, he aims to sexually confuse, he’s Hugo Grrrl!
